Exciting news from Japan, where The Wine Kingdom magazine has awarded a 5-star rating (the highest possible) to Argento Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2009. This is an excellent result in a blind tasting in one of the most influential major wine magazines in Japan — 5 stars is not easy to achieve!

Here is a rough translation of the comments from the magazine about our wine:

“Cabernet Sauvignon from Argentina in which we can enjoy round flavours. This producer was established in 1998 in Mendoza and is an up-and-coming winery in the Japanese market. Grapes were grown in high-altitude vineyards at 700 to 1,300 metres above sea level with many sunny days. We can enjoy matured berry fruit flavours and a round taste. Hints of mineral, full tannins and persistent acidity.”

Decanter Magazine has awarded their prestigious International Trophy for Best Red Single Varietal under £10 to Argento Bonarda 2010. The announcement was made at Decanter’s annual World Wine Awards Dinner at the Royal Opera House in London, UK, where Managing Director Amelia Nolan and Winemaker Silvia Corti proudly accepted the award.

From Decanter:

Argento, Bonarda, Mendoza, Argentina
2010 (13%)
Exciting, warm, spicy and inviting with ripe, succulent fruit plus a good backbone of acidity and tannin. Broad, rich, ripe and full bodied, with liquorice and dark chocolate to finish.
UK: £6.99; Bib. US: $12.99; USLN

And so the Argentinian juggernaut rolls on, thanks to a super wine made from the country’s ‘other’ signature red grape and produced by one of its major names. Since its formation in 1998, Argento has been Argentina’s most visible ambassador. Many wine drinkers overseas will have had their first Argentinian encounter courtesy of Argento, which is owned by Bodegas Esmeralda of Argentina and UK wine importer Bibendum. In the past decade, Argento has evolved to become a reliable standard-bearer for Argentina, producing balanced, fruit-forward wines that are keenly priced. The company understands something crucial about Argentinian culture: that wine is part of the family’s table.

A panel of international travellers and wine experts has declared Argento Malbec to be the best red wine in a recent blind tasting of airline economy wines, conducted by Skyscanner.

The panel of ten judges, led by wine expert Tom Cannavan, were asked to blind taste 12 red and 12 white wines served on board the major carriers, and score each a mark out of 10.

The winning reds showed a greater preference towards national carriers with British Airways’ Argento Malbec scoring the highest.

The tasting panel was made up of 10 judges across seven nationalities and included wine experts Juel Mahoney of Wine Woman & Song and Peter Adshead, Sommelier at the five-star Rocco Forte Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh.

Hugo Sabogal writes for El Espectador

“Would you like a quick suggestion for a good wine to drink tonight (or this weekend) that won’t break your budget and is widely available? Many of our readers have said this is something they would like, so here is this week’s selection, the 2010 Argento Torrontés from the Cafayate Valley in the Salta Province of Argentina.”

2010 Argento Torrontés (Cafayate Valley Salta, Argentina): “Pale, greenish straw yellow in color. Nice nose with beautiful grapefruit aromas. More citrus fruits as well as floral notes and a hint of mint come through on the palate. Dry and light to medium-bodied with lively acidity and a long, fresh finish.”
Quality: 3.5 stars (out of 5)
QPR: 4 bangs for your buck (out of 5)

Marisa D’Vari, acclaimed luxury travel and fine wine writer, and publisher of AWineStory.com, recently attended a dinner hosted by Argento at Industria Argentina in Tribeca, New York City, where she met (and was charmed by) Winemaker Nick Goldschmidt, General Manager Juan Pablo Lupiañez, and Marketing Manager Polly Long.

Enjoy reading Marisa’s write-up of the evening and the wines here. Catching up with Argento: Quality Wine of Argentina

The menu for the evening consisted of adventurous, but traditionally-influenced Argentinian foods matched exquisitely with Argento wines.

Argento Cool Climate Pinot Grigio was served as a welcoming aperitif. Our Torrontés was matched with crab ceviche; the Bonarda with smoked Patagonian trout; the Malbec with fava beans and potatoes; the Cabernet with crispy duck; and finally the Reserva Malbec was paired perfectly with slow cooked short ribs of beef.
